Spanish and voice students took their learning outside of the traditional classroom and into Fresno State’s Concert Hall on Friday, for a cross-disciplinary lecture-recital that examined Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

This collaborative effort between the Department of Music and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures combined operatic singing, lecture and a question-and-answer segment in a 50-minute class performance.

Center for Creativity and the Arts presents its lineup for fall 2017

Debasis Chakroborty will perform a concert of classical Hindustani music at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, in the Concert Hall at Fresno State. Chakroborty performs using a modified Hawaiian slide guitar. He will be accompanied on the tabla (a South Asian membranophone percussion instrument) by Shashanka Bakshi, a senior student of Samta Prasad of Banaras Gharana.

Watch out for hot books! The Press at California State University, Fresno has published as many new volumes in the past year as it usually does in three and a half years.
Since last fall, The Press — a university press operated by the College of Arts and Humanities at Fresno State — has published six new books. Founded in 1982, The Press has published 56 volumes — in its history, an average of 1.7 per year.

Music alum Constantine Pappas gets understudy for lead role in ‘Phantom’

Earlier this summer, Donald Munro reported that Fresno State music alum Constantine Pappas landed a huge role playing the understudy to the character of Raoul in the national tour of “The Phantom of the Opera.” Since joining the cast for rehearsals on May 3 in El Paso, Pappas has done 11 performances as Raoul.
