Transitioning into college can be a nerve-racking experience as you attempt to navigate your new campus atmosphere. You may have been told that it is critical to make connections early on to help you be successful, but where do you start?

We have the answer — the College of Arts and Humanities Convocation for New and Transfer Students.

The College of Arts and Humanities is holding its second annual new student convocation at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 30, in Fresno State’s Satellite Student Union.

You may have attended the New Student Convocation for Fresno State on Monday, Aug. 21. Where that event invites you to celebrate the new year and welcomes you to the university, this event is tailored specifically to welcome you to our College of Arts and Humanities, helping you to connect with students and staff within the College that will play a part in your journey here at Fresno State.

The event will be an opportunity for new students in the college to meet not only their future classmates, but faculty and staff that may be teaching them, leading them or advising them in their time at Fresno State.

“The Dean, [Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval], and I decided in 2016 to create a new tradition of a Convocation at the beginning of the year for all of the students of the College,” said Dr. Honora Chapman, associate dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. “This event gives them an opportunity to see that they belong to a community of artists and humanists and that they have department chairs, faculty and a Dean’s Office that truly wish to help them find their passion here, thrive and achieve their long-term dreams.”

At the event, you will have the opportunity to meet the deans of the College, the head of your department, your future professors and, hopefully, your future friends within the College. You will also be able to meet the counselors from the Arts and Humanities Advising Center who can help you throughout your academic career in planning toward the end goal — graduation.

The event will begin with a light lunch at 11:45 a.m. and will follow with a program at noon.

We invite you to share your photos from the event on Instagram with the hashtag #CAHConvocation. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter @FresnoStateCAH for live event coverage and check out our exclusive event Snapchat filter, available in and around the SSU.

The College of Arts and Humanities provides a diverse student population with the communication skills, humanistic values and cultural awareness that form the foundation of scholarship. The college offers intellectual and artistic programs that engage students and faculty and the community in collaboration, dialog and discovery. These programs help preserve, illuminate and nourish the arts and humanities for the campus and for the wider community.

  1. As an alumna (2005) of the College of Arts and Humanities, I commend the Dean and Assistant Dean on this New Student Convocation. This gathering of Faculty, Staff and Students will be a great assets to the incoming students, making them immediately feel part of the whole College community, instead of just the particular Major they are pursuing.
