Red Wave indoor percussion ensemble to compete in Ohio

The Red Wave, Fresno State’s indoor percussion ensemble, will head to the Winter Percussion World Championships April 19-21 in Dayton, Ohio. There they will compete against 34 other college groups.

Steven McKeithen, associate director of bands for the Department of Music, said the ensemble is in its second year. In addition to competing at the championships, the trip is an opportunity to recruit new talented musicians to Fresno State to participate in the wide variety of ensembles that are available.

“About 65 percent of the students in the group aren’t music majors,” McKeithen said, “so the composition of the membership is very diverse and represents a cross-section of our community.

The Red Wave will be rehearsing from 5-9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, before their equipment leaves next week for the ensemble’s trek to Dayton.
