Fresno State and Fresno City College partnered up for High School Journalism Day Friday, March 9, to introduce students to opportunities in the field of journalism. The event was held at the Fresno City campus in the Old Administration Building.
This week on Fresno State Focus, a public affairs program produced by Media, Communications and Journalism students, anchor Matt Broughton of Fresno will speak with ASI officer Travis Childress about the elections on campus and the “Bold New U” initiative. Then, anchor Bobby Falat of Visalia will tell us how one local man is fighting his way back into the octagon after multiple career threatening injuries.
CineCulture will present “Shadow of Drought: Southern California’s Looming Water Crisis” (2018) at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium at the Student Recreation Center (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.). The post-screening discussion will be led by director Bill Wisneski.
KFSR Radio, the nonprofit radio station housed on Fresno State’s campus, will host the KFSR Jazz and Wine Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the University House (4411 N. Van Ness Blvd.) in Fresno’s Old Fig Garden neighborhood. A limited number of tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at http://kfsr.org.

CineCulture will present “Serenade for Haiti” (2016) at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium at the Student Recreation Center (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.). The post-screening discussion will be led by producer Christy McGill.
Directed by Owsley Brown, “Serenade for Haiti” is a documentary-style film telling the story of the Sainte Trinité Music School, a small classical music school in the heart of troubled Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Four reporters at three San Joaquin Valley newspapers won 2017 George F. Gruner Prizes for Meritorious Public Service in journalism. The awards for work published in 2017 were announced Thursday, March 1, at the 30th annual Gruner Awards ceremony at the Fresno Art Museum.

The Fresno State Women’s Studies Program is celebrating National Women’s History Month with a lecture series that includes two Arts and Humanities professors.
Dr. Nancy Van Leuven, Media, Communications and Journalism, on Tuesday, March 6, and Dr. María Dolores Morillo, Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, on Thursday, March 22. Each lecture will be located in the Henry Madden Library Room 3212 from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
CineCulture announces the lineup for the remainder of the spring semester. Most CineCulture screenings are at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays during the semester in the Peters Education Center Auditorium (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.) in the Student Recreation Center. All films screened on campus are free and open to the public. Parking is not enforced after 4 p.m. on Fridays.

For the first time, Fresno State’s Department of Media, Communications and Journalism will partner with the Asian College of Journalism for Pop Up Newsroom, an experimental broadcast focusing on culture that will air live on Facebook at 2:30 a.m. Feb. 1.

Former Executive Editor Jim Boren will teach two sections of the upper division writing course MCJ 102W – Reporting. Stacy Batrich-Smith and her daughter Cassidy Smith (pictured above) have deep ties to Fresno State. Both are Arts and Humanities alums — Stacy graduated from the then-Radio and Television option in 1976; Cassidy was a Smittcamp scholar and a dean’s medalist from the Department of Media, Communications and Journalism in 2011. And both participated in Peach Blossom, the annual oral interpretation festival hosted by the Department of Communication.
Valley media giants Joe Rosato Sr. and Jim Tucker were honored alongside MCJ fellows and several scholarship recipients during the MCJ Hall of Fame and Scholarship Reception.
More than 200 packs of crayons and 150 coloring books were delivered to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera (9300 Valley Children’s Place) on Nov. 17 as part of a recent class project and crayon drive by Fresno State students in a Media, Communications and Journalism publication design course.

We caught up with Fresno State Media, Communications and Journalism alumna, Ashley Taylor, for a Q&A. Taylor graduated from the MCJ Department in 2004 with an emphasis in print journalism and a minor in music. She was also a member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College.
Three years after completing her undergraduate work at Fresno State, she went on to become a news producer for KMPH here in the Valley. Taylor is now a news producer living in New York City where she currently produces Fox News Edge,

When Warren R. Paboojian is called a “Bulldog in the courtroom,” he smiles.
“After being a lawyer for over 30 years, I’ve developed a little bit of a nickname,” Warren says with mirth in his eyes. “Whenever someone calls me a Bulldog, I’m pretty proud of that.”
Warren’s Bulldog pride shines because of his rich experience at Fresno State and his family’s path to create a better life for him.

“’Voice and Silence’ will look at the various ways in which we communicate our ideas, points of views and concerns regarding current events,” said Cindy Urrutia, coordinator of the center.
A lecture on “Fifty Years of Armenian Literature in France: A Zenith of Diasporan Literature,” by author and translator Christopher Atamian at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, is the first presentation in the Armenian Studies Program’s 2017 Fall Lecture Series, supported by the Leon S. Peters Foundation.
Fresno State’s CineCulture film series and Fresno Filmworks present “Pop Aye” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at the Tower Theatre (815 E. Olive Ave.). “Pop Aye,” by Singapore-born filmmaker Kirsten Tan, is a road film about a disenchanted architect named Thana who bumps into his long-lost elephant, Pop Aye, on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand.
