The Fresno Center for Nonviolence awarded several Way of Peace awards at its May 6 25th anniversary banquet at the First Congregational Church in Fresno.
CineCulture, a film series provided as a service to Fresno State campus students, faculty, and staff, and community, received the 2017 award given to an organization. CineCulture Club, which is also an on-campus club, promotes cultural awareness through film and post-screening discussions.
“As the Center celebrated its 25th anniversary, we chose CineCulture for our Organization Award because its overarching goal of its academic course, campus club and film series is offered as a service to the campus and broader community,” said Angela Price, development director for the Fresno Center for Nonviolence. “They work to create bridges of cultural understanding through film and public dialogue. A hallmark of the series is the post screening discussion and Dr. Mary Husain, instructor and club adviser, tries to invite as many directors as possible.”
Dr. Mary Husain, a professor in the Department of Communication and the Department of Media, Communications and Journalism, accepted the award given to an organization on behalf of CineCulture. Husain is the club adviser.
“Dr. Husain is in her 10th year being responsible for the series,” Price said, “and throughout the years, one of her goals has been to collaborate with as many departments and community groups as possible in a quest to bring outstanding guest directors and renowned guest speakers to our community.”
