The College of Arts and Humanities provides a diverse student population with the communication skills, humanistic values and cultural awareness that form the foundation of scholarship. The college offers intellectual and artistic programs that engage students and faculty and the community in collaboration, dialog and discovery. These programs help preserve, illuminate and nourish the arts and humanities for the campus and for the wider community.
After meeting at the new faculty orientation in the fall of 2016, Holly Sowles, an interior design professor in the Department of Art and Design, and Dr. Katy Tarrant, a professor in the Animal Science and Agricultural Education Department, accepted a challenge to work with others outside of their own colleges.
In the two years since then, Sowles, Tarrant and students in both of their departments have worked toward creating an environmental enrichment that expands the diversity of welfare enhancements for chickens raised in the agricultural science program. In the process, they have created a richer environment for students in both areas of study.

CineCulture announces the lineup for the remainder of the spring semester. Most CineCulture screenings are at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays during the semester in the Peters Education Center Auditorium (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.) in the Student Recreation Center. Over the years, Ben and Clarice Krikorian have formed a deep connection with the College of Arts and Humanities. Since 2010, the Krikorians have made it easier for Fresno State students who chose to follow their passion and study the arts. They established an orchestra scholarship and a piano scholarship. The scholarships go to a music student studying in those areas.
Dr. Jason Brown, a Fresno State alum, was awarded the graduate dean’s medal in 2002 while earning his master’s degree in linguistics. Now he is a professor at the University of Auckland and the head of the Linguistics Society of New Zealand.
In January, Dean’s Council funds helped yet another Arts and Humanities student experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Fresno State Master of Fine Arts Program in Creative Writing will feature the 2016 winner of the Philip Levine Prize and two of its own accomplished faculty authors in its Spring 2018 Fresno Poets’ Association reading series.

This pictorial work is a companion to the recent “Unsung Hereos” exhibition, which was on display in November at M Street Graduate Studios in downtown Fresno.

Fresno State’s commemoration of Human Rights Day at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, will feature Dolores Huerta, president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, and Amanda Renteria, chief of operations for the California Department of Justice. Stacy Batrich-Smith and her daughter Cassidy Smith (pictured above) have deep ties to Fresno State. A refreshed version of the William Shakespeare classic, “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” will run Dec. 1 – 9 at the John Wright Theatre at Fresno State. The production receives an original and accessible concept by director Brad Myers, and is the third show of University Theatre’s 2017-18 season.
More than 200 packs of crayons and 150 coloring books were delivered to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera (9300 Valley Children’s Place) on Nov. 17 as part of a recent class project and crayon drive by Fresno State students in a Media, Communications and Journalism publication design course.

Pioneering author and editor Mai Neng Moua will read from her new nonfiction book “The Bride Price: A Hmong Wedding Story” at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Fresno State. The evening, hosted by the Hmong American Writers’ Circle and the Fresno State Hmong minor option, will feature a reading by the author and a Q&A session moderated by Dr. Kao-ly Yang, followed by a reception and book signing. The Fresno State Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert titled “Romantic Obsession” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in the Concert Hall at Fresno State. The concert will feature Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony and selections from Tchaikovsky’s opera “Eugene Onegin.” Dr. Thomas Loewenheim will conduct the Orchestra.

Nonfiction authors Jericho Parms and Lina María Ferreira Cabeza-Vanegas will read from their work at The Normal School fall reading event on Thursday, Nov. 16, at Fresno State. We caught up with Fresno State Media, Communications and Journalism alumna, Ashley Taylor, for a Q&A. Taylor graduated from the MCJ Department in 2004 with an emphasis in print journalism and a minor in music. She was also a member of the Smittcamp Family Honors College.
Three years after completing her undergraduate work at Fresno State, she went on to become a news producer for KMPH here in the Valley. Taylor is now a news producer living in New York City where she currently produces Fox News Edge,
The Ethics Center presents Richard Rothstein, who will speak about his recent book, “The Color of Law,” from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in North Gym 118. “The Color of Law” examines how segregation in America is the byproduct of explicit government policies at the local, state, and federal levels.

Fresno State and the community rallied together on Nov. 2 to make the University’s first-ever online Day of Giving (D.O.G.) a success as 1,138 unique donors from 29 states and 3 countries participated. When the 24-hour campaign ended at 11:59 p.m., 168 digital ambassadors had helped secure 1,316 gifts totaling $431,395. Final results by college, area and department will be available by the end of the week.

The mixed-media interactive exhibition also will be open from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, as part of ArtHop, the open house of galleries and studios in downtown Fresno and the Tower District held on the first Thursday of each month.
