OPEN TO ALL MAJORS

Course:
AH 105: Study in Florence

Music and art combine to be the eternal heartbeat of this historic city. The goal of this course is to convey the spirit and the “energy” of the Renaissance and the city that birthed an era, Florence.

You will enhance your artistic appreciation of music through your experience by discovering Florence’s grand historical venues and attending musical events.

Spend three weeks living in the heart of Florence and taking day trips to Sienna, Fiesole, San Gimignano, Venice and Assisi. Hear the Cistercian monks of San Miniato al monte perform Gregorian chant in their evening Vespers ceremony and see an opera in the beautiful Boboli Gardens of Palazzo Pitti. Hear a concert at the new Opera di Firenze or one of Florence’s many other beautiful theatres.

Explore some of the world’s most famous works of art at the Galleria dell Academia, the Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace, the Bargello and more, then take in breathtaking views from Piazzale Michelangelo and the Tuscan countryside.

COST: Entrance fees to museums, travel within Italy and lodging and transportation package from San Francisco to Florence costs: $4,800*; a $200 non-refundable deposit holds your spot on the program.

*Does not include personal expenses during the trip; up to $1,000 IRA grant funding (max of 12 grants) available to qualified students and on a first-come, first-served basis.

The course meets once a month during the spring semester. Course credit earned will be applied to your Spring 2018 semester. Satisfies 3 units, GE Area IC.

Thanks to a grant from The Bertha and John Garabedian Charitable Foundation, nine of the 15 students who participated in the course in the Spring 2016 semester received generous scholarship support, in addition to instructionally related activity grants.
