Competing against other students from San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Reno and the Fresno area, Fresno State graphic design students have won nine gold and eight silver ADDY awards in the American Advertising Awards, District 14 competition.
“These student ADDY Award wins are a testament to the high level of achievement that our students have attained through their talent, dedication and creative spirit,” said Rebecca Barnes, former graphic design lecturer. “Most of these award-winning students will be graduating in May. Being a student ADDY Award winner will help them as they begin to launch their careers in the competitive Advertising Industry.”
The regional level is the second level of a three-tiered competition. Gold-winning designs move on to the national level.
The local ADDY Awards for the Fresno area were hosted by the American Advertising Federation of Fresno (AAF Fresno) on March 3 in Downtown Fresno. The event recognized local creative agencies and in-house marketing departments before turning to the student awards.
While many students won awards in the local competition, graphic design major Alicia Benitz stood out with 15 awards, including “best of show” and six gold awards. In fact, she won so many awards several times she was called back up front to accept another award before she got back to her table.
“It feels really good. I’ve been in school for five years, and to see my work progress from my first year makes me emotional, “ said Benitez. “I’m happy my hard work paid off.”
Benitez graduates in May and plans to work locally. She was able to network with several local agencies and businesses at the ceremony.
Senior Eliza Gabito also did incredibly well at the local awards, with eight awards, including two judges’ choice and two gold awards. The judges’ choice awards are optional and only given when the work is exceptional.
“I’m really grateful for the design program. All the skills I’ve gained in the last four years have let me become a better designer and be more passionate about the industry,” said Gabito.
Gabito recently started a graphic design position at Five Creative Group in downtown Clovis. She will graduate in May.
Both continued their success at the regionals. Benitez received five gold and one silver award and Gabito received two golds and two silvers.
