World peace vigil and photo exhibition mark Gandhi celebrations

xg8e7488Fresno State will observe Mahatma Gandhi’s 147th birthday and celebrate Gandhi Jayanti with a candlelight vigil for world peace from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Peace Garden on campus.

A photo exhibition, “Life of Gandhi,” opened Sept. 26 at the Henry Madden Library and runs through Oct. 7. The community celebration Oct. 5 will include a garlanding and flower ceremony and guest speakers led by University President Joseph I. Castro and other civil leaders.

The celebration will also feature classical and folk dances accompanied by a musical tribute. Guests are invited to bring flowers and candles.

All events are free and open to the public. Parking is $3 for a day permit, available at parking lot dispensers (parking is free on weekends beginning at 4 p.m. Fridays). INFO: Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor at 559.435.2212 or the Indian Students Club at 559.862.9663.
