Fresno State’s Theatre for Young Audiences will present the free public performances of “Nice & Slow” by Lojo Simon and directed by Nicola Olsen.

Scheduled performances will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18th, and at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th, at the Dennis & Cheryl Woods Theatre located on campus. Admission is free, and reservations are not required.

In “Nice & Slow,” we follow Sam, who finds themselves grappling with the pressures of a fast-paced lifestyle imposed by the adults around them. However, a chance encounter with a sloth residing in their room alters their day entirely, leading to whimsical adventures and profound realizations about the value of slowing down.

In conjunction with the performances, the Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to host two additional events. Playwright Lojo Simon will be present on campus for the 11:30 a.m. performance on Thursday, April 18th, participating in a post-show discussion alongside the cast and director.

Following this, Lojo Simon will lead a panel discussion titled “Pump the Brakes: A Panel Discussion on the Pace of Childhood” from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Fresno State Library Room 3212. This insightful dialogue will explore the importance of embracing a “Nice and Slow” approach to childhood, drawing from perspectives within education, theatre, and parenting. Inspired by David Elkind’s seminal work “The Hurried Child,” our panel aims to ignite meaningful conversations among educators, parents, and future caregivers alike.

Both events featuring the playwright will be offered to the public free of charge. Join us for an enriching exploration into the significance of slowing down in our fast-paced world.

Fresno State no longer requires masks to be worn indoors, but based on updated guidance from public health experts, the University highly recommends that all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of vaccination status, wear a surgical grade or KN95 mask indoors. Doors open 30 minutes before curtain. Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion.

Parking is free for shows on Saturday. For Thursday’s show, parking permits are required and can be purchased at dispensers in parking lots on campus.
