The following letter was sent by email to the Fresno State College of Arts and Humanities faculty at approximately 9:45 a.m., Thursday, June 4, 2020.
Dear Colleagues,
The College of Arts and Humanities stands firmly united with the Floyd family, members of the African American community, and our Fresno State community in condemning the violence perpetrated against Mr. George Floyd, as well as racism in our communities and country.
The senseless, vicious killing of Mr. Floyd last week has shaken us to the core. As artists and humanists, we have dedicated our lives to studying and producing scholarly and creative works while educating our students about the human condition and the inherent dignity of every person. Though we may struggle to find the right words in response to such a monstrous injustice and the pain it has caused so many, this is how the liberal arts liberate us: They allow us to express our sorrow, shock, and hope for something better for ourselves and our nation.
Our diverse students share our desire to see justice. It is an honor to work at a university dedicated to supporting them as they develop their voice through a wide variety of disciplines. As faculty, we strive to facilitate this process of discovery and creativity in our students. Thank you for your efforts to educate our students so that they have the tools to combat racism and violence.
Please remember that individually and collectively, as artists and humanists, we help make our community in Fresno more vibrant, collaborative, creative, contemplative, and compassionate. Our fields exhibit and engender the empathy that will surely be the catalyst towards a better future, activated through our energetic, talented students who are here at Fresno State to build better lives.

it is shameful how you did not mention the deaths of many, many other black and brown (and white and asian for that matter) people who died as a direct result of the riots and looting that grew out of the “protestors” who did not leave at curview time. I fully support justice for george floyd and all of the people murdered during the riots. Will you apologize for not talking about the others? Do you know the names of the other’s murdered? Do the sources of media that you consume tell you about them? No. they do not. I also know some professors in your employ who were not consulted about this statement. So. It appears to represent only a select few. Will you print my comment or will you censor me? Do you support democracy and individual liberty over mob tyranny Fresno state. That is a very open question right now. #theriotmobtookawaymysafespace
