The community is invited to the annual celebration of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s birthday at 6 p.m., Oct. 2 in the Peace Garden, north of the Henry Madden Library. The program includes a garlanding ceremony, music, interfaith tributes, classical dance, and a pledge against hate and violence.
Special guests include consul Sumati Rao, representing ambassador Sanjay Panda, Indian Consulate Office in San Francisco; Juan Felipe Herrera, U.S. Poet Laureate from 2015 to 2017; Deborah Adishian-Astone, Vice President of Administration at Fresno State; Frank Lamas, Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Fresno State; and dignitaries from the city and county of Fresno.
During the ceremony, songs will be performed by the local chapter of Raging Grannies and Dr. Asarulislam Islam Syed of Bakersfield. The ceremony will conclude with a guided meditation by Veena Kapoor.
