Philosophy professor Douglas Allen, a prominent Mahatma Gandhi scholar, philosopher, author of over 15 books, and peace activist from the University of Maine, will give a speech entitled, “Mahatma Gandhi for Us Today: An Ethical Life of Nonviolence and Peace” on Wednesday, April 4, at Fresno State.
On Thursday, March 15, Theatre for Young Audiences visited Valley Children’s Hospital for a special performance. Theatre for Young Audiences company members turned the Guild Hall into a performance space in a matter of 30 minutes and performed for a crowd of about 15 patients, with their parents and caretakers at their side.
Fresno State and Fresno City College partnered up for High School Journalism Day Friday, March 9, to introduce students to opportunities in the field of journalism. The event was held at the Fresno City campus in the Old Administration Building.

Social psychologist Dr. Robert V. Levine, author of “Stranger in the Mirror: The Scientific Search for the Self,” will give a lecture, titled “The Voices in our Heads,” as part of the spring programming for Fresno State’s Center for Creativity and the Arts. Levine’s latest book, which is the basis for his lecture, is published by The Press at California State University, Fresno. The lecture is scheduled for 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the Alice Peters Auditorium.
Fresno State’s Barking Bulldogs debate team began in 2011. It’s been growing since then, and its members compete in local, regional and even in national championships representing Fresno State. One team, in particular, has had quite a showing this season. Hunter Sansom and Primavera Leal Martinez, who compete as partners, placed third in the varsity division of the Winter at the Beach tournament at CSU Long Beach on Feb. 2-4. Most recently, they returned to CSU Long Beach to compete in the Pacific Championship Tournament and finished eighth in the varsity division on Feb. 23-25 of last month.
KFSR Radio, the nonprofit radio station housed on Fresno State’s campus, will host the KFSR Jazz and Wine Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the University House (4411 N. Van Ness Blvd.) in Fresno’s Old Fig Garden neighborhood. A limited number of tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at http://kfsr.org.
U.S. Fulbright Scholar Dr. Hayk Demoyan will give a lecture, “Multiple Identities and Memories of the Armenian World,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 19, in the University Business Center, Alice Peters Auditorium, Room 191 on the Fresno State campus. The presentation is part of the Spring Lecture Series of the Armenian Studies Program and is funded through the Leon S. Peters Foundation.

The Armenian Studies Program of Fresno State will hold its 30th annual banquet on Sunday, March 18, at the Fort Washington Country Club in Fresno. This year’s banquet will feature Fresno State President Dr. Joseph I. Castro as one of the main speakers. Dr. Castro was appointed the eighth president of Fresno State in 2013.

Directed by Owsley Brown, “Serenade for Haiti” is a documentary-style film telling the story of the Sainte Trinité Music School, a small classical music school in the heart of troubled Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Four reporters at three San Joaquin Valley newspapers won 2017 George F. Gruner Prizes for Meritorious Public Service in journalism. The awards for work published in 2017 were announced Thursday, March 1, at the 30th annual Gruner Awards ceremony at the Fresno Art Museum.
