The College of Arts and Humanities is fundamental to the University, complementing and augmenting every major on campus. We train engaged professionals and produce civic-minded graduates, experts in writing and rhetoric, and visionary artists who enrich our world and elevate our quality of life.
This is achieved through donors’ commitment to the College of Arts and Humanities Dean’s Council Annual Fund, which supports student scholarship as well as enriching the experience of our faculty members.
Una Mjurka, a ceramics professor in the Art and Design Department, returned from a three-week intensive artist’s symposium in Estonia reinvigorated. Mjurka, a native of Latvia, relished the opportunity to reconnect with the artists’ community in Eastern Europe.
While at the 16th annual Kohila Symposium, Mjurka and 12 other artists from around the world created masterpieces using the an anagama-type kiln, firing ceramics in a wood-fired method. Mjurka said she enjoyed the unpredictable element of working with fire and the collaboration – someone had to be manning the kiln around the clock to keep the fire going.
“This was a humbling and inspirational opportunity. It was a chance to connect with artists from around the world and reconnect with the artistic community. I will be able to share the skills learned with my students as well as show them that there are many opportunities like this that they can be a part of.”
Funds from the Dean’s Council helped enable Mjurka to attend the Kohila Symposium. Experiences like the one Una took part in give our faculty an opportunity to connect with other artists, to give free rein to their own artistic expression and recharge their excitement about what they are passing along to students back here in the classroom. Your contributions to the Dean’s Council make that possible.
