Fall 2022 Message from the Dean

Dear Friends of the College of Arts and Humanities,

We have truly turned the corner! Students and faculty are back on campus more than ever since 2020, and the University celebrated the investiture of President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, our former dean and Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, with a joyful ceremony in September. We are also celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Collegian, the Fresno State student newspaper produced under the auspices of the college.

Our college is filling the campus calendar with events this fall, including Armenian Studies lectures by our new Kazan Visiting Professor, Dr. Hrag Papazian, and the exciting symphony orchestra concert featuring our two new piano professors, Dr. Peter Klimo and Dr. Michael Krikorian.

We collaborate across campus, too, including with Athletics. Please read about the impactful work of Dr. Jaydene Elvin with The Hub for Language Teaching and Learning, helping the women’s basketball team improve its teamwork through better communication. Our fantastic Bulldog Marching Band under the direction of Assoc. Prof. Steven McKeithen has performed to its usual high standard at football games this fall. They are looking forward to an exciting trip to Pasadena to participate in Fresno State’s first appearance in the Rose Parade on January 2nd, where they will literally be “turning the corner,” the theme of this year’s parade. Join us in Pasadena or watch on TV to see our 270 musicians make the big turn from Orange Grove onto Colorado!

At home in Fresno, our students and alumni make a difference every day through volunteering and at work, sharing their talents for the betterment of our community. They also make their mark further afield, including with a Seattle company and the New York Times. And dozens of Fresno State students will be venturing abroad this summer on several study abroad experiences organized by Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures faculty, a truly transformative experience.

Finally, we are so grateful to those who have established scholarships for our students, including the Fresno Advertising Federation.

Thanks to your support, we’re all turning the corner and looking forward to a wonderful year!

Sincerely,

Honora Chapman
