Jennifer Riojas’s earliest memories are of movies, a source of comfort and imagination that inspired her journey. From a young age, Riojas always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker.
Jennifer-Juliette Marissa Riojas is an undergraduate student receiving her B.A. in media, communications and journalism and is the undergraduate Student of Distinction from the Department of Media, Communications and Journalism (MCJ).
“It was evident from the beginning that Jennifer possesses a deep love for filmmaking, and this translated into the beautiful and compelling work she produced,” said Samuel Contreras, assistant professor of film and media arts.
Throughout her time at Fresno State, Riojas excelled in her classes and thrived in her projects and assignments. One of her favorite experiences was a short film she wrote and directed called “Dine and Dash,” which took four months to produce.
“As a filmmaker, I strive for my stories to have elements that are based on real aspects of my life. ‘Dine and Dash’ was no exception, as the two leads are based on my best friend and I. This project was a highlight of my college experience and a dream to watch come to fruition,” said Riojas.
Riojas gives credit to Fresno State for the opportunities and environments that have been cultivated for her.
“The MCJ department and College of Arts and Humanities have nurtured my creativity, gave me the opportunity to make new lifelong connections and the courage to follow my dreams of becoming a filmmaker. It was my honor to be under the instruction of the finest faculty on campus and work alongside many great colleagues,” Riojas said.
Following graduation, Riojas intends to move to LA to become a “powerful female director,” continuing to make films while practicing her freelance photography and videography.
“There is a lot to be impressed with Jennifer. She’s smart, driven and curious about the world around her, a leader among her peers. Yet what I’m most impressed by is Jennifer’s thoughtfulness,” said Jes Therkelsen, professor of film and media arts. “I have a lot of confidence in Jennifer and look forward to watching her work develop and bloom.”
“My time at Fresno State has been filled with academic success and valuable life experiences that have shaped me to be not only a great filmmaker but also the woman my four-year-old self dreamed of,” Riojas said.
