‘Carmina Burana’ is centerpiece of the Spring 2024 Music Department lineup

The Fresno State Music Department is proud to present a diverse array of performances that highlight the incredible talents of our students, faculty, and esteemed guest artists for the Spring 2024 semester.

A special highlight of the calendar is the spectacular rendition of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” on April 26th and 27th. This powerful and dynamic piece, a gem in the classical music world, will be performed by our students at the Fresno State Concert Hall. Known for its dramatic chorus and the iconic “O Fortuna,” “Carmina Burana” offers an immersive experience in the themes of fate and fortune. These performances are not to be missed, promising an evening of emotional intensity and breathtaking music.

Our 2024 schedule is packed with a variety of events, from the Double Reed Day Guest Artist Recital in January to the Big Bands Jazz Concert in May. Each concert and recital celebrates music and is an opportunity to showcase the rich talent of our students at Fresno State.

2024 Spring Music Lineup

2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, Wahlberg Recital Hall
Double Reed Day Guest Artist Recital – Martin Kuuskmann and Ian Wisekal
Featuring Ian Wisekal, oboe and Martin Kuuskmann, bassoon
Tickets – $10 general admission; $5 military/veteran, senior, employee, non-Fresno State student; free for Fresno State students

Estonian-born bassoonist Martin Kuuskmann, has garnered global acclaim, earning multiple Grammy nominations and solidifying his status as one of the foremost solo instrumentalists of our time. Currently a Professor of Bassoon at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, Kuuskmann also imparted his expertise at the Manhattan School of Music. His educational journey, which led him to degrees from both the Manhattan School of Music and the Yale School of Music, was shaped by the guidance of esteemed mentors such as Stephen Maxym, Frank Morelli, Rufus Olivier, and Vernon Read.

Originally from Dallas, TX and Stony Brook, NY, Ian Wisekal has distinguished himself as the Principal Oboist for both the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crested Butte Music Festival. His notable career also includes serving as the Associate Principal Oboist with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. Wisekal’s artistry is showcased in the orchestra’s recording of “Cofresí,” a performance that earned a nomination for a Latin Grammy. In 2013, he expanded his professional journey by joining the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music as a faculty member.

Brad Edwards, Tenor Trombone Arizona State University

With a style that has been described as “passionate,” “fiercely vigorous,” and even “humorous,” Brad Edwards has appeared as a soloist before audiences in the United States and Europe. His solo credits include radio and television broadcasts, premieres of new music, guest recitals at colleges and regional workshops, and concertos with student and professional orchestras and wind ensembles.

Walk in Peace Concert

Fresno State and Fresno City College jointly host an annual event, “Walk in Peace: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month.” This exceptional concert showcases the combined choirs of both institutions, offering a poignant and inspirational tribute to music, harmony, and Dr. King’s enduring influence. The evening is filled with emotional readings and musical pieces that not only honor the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but also celebrate Black History Month and the African American community’s rich cultural heritage. Third Coast Percussion Concert

Founded in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has performed hundreds of concerts across the country, presents an annual concert season at home in Chicago, teaches musicians of all ages and experience levels, and has commissioned dozens of new works by composers, including Glenn Kotche, Philip Glass, Devonté Hynes, Chris Cerrone, Augusta Read Thomas, Donnacha Dennehy, and David T.
