Fresno State’s University Theatre will present the Fresno premiere of the groundbreaking production of “At the Wedding” by Bryna Turner and directed by Kathleen McKinley. The production celebrates and explores the lives of queer characters in their search for love and conciliation.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 – 28 and Oct. 31 – Nov. 4, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre. Tickets are $17 for adults, $15 for Fresno State faculty, staff, alumni and military and $10 for all students. Children under 5 are not permitted.
A story of loss, love and redemption, Turner’s new comedy follows the world’s loneliest (and wittiest) single woman, Carlo, as she crashes her ex-girlfriend’s wedding to a man. Through a series of flirtations, conversations, and collisions with past lovers, old enemies, new friends, and perfect strangers, Carlo strives to understand whether or not heartbreak is a permanent human condition.
“At the Wedding” is a bold and thought-provoking play that embraces the rich diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. With heartwarming and relatable characters, the play showcases the joys and challenges of love, relationships, and identity, focusing on the queer experience. Bryna Turner’s insightful and humorous script captures the essence of queer relationships, making it a must-see for all audiences.
“This show is a fresh and unexpected take on the complexities of love,” says director Kathleen McKinley. “ Weddings are one of those rituals that can be joyous and hopeful but also fraught with unpredictability, most especially when there is one unruly, reluctant, snarky guest who hopes to steal away the bride! For my final production at University Theatre, I am delighted to introduce to our region the new, fresh theatre voice of playwright Bryna Turner.”
The cast includes Arium Andrews, Alyssa Benitez, Hannah Berry, Nico J. Divicarro, German Gutierrez, Tracy Hostmyer, Terell Morris, and Josh Taber.
This production not only celebrates the diversity of love but also emphasizes the importance of representation on the stage. “At the Wedding” tells a story that is rarely explored, offering a unique perspective on the lives and experiences of queer individuals. It’s a play that challenges stereotypes, fosters understanding, and celebrates the beauty of love in all its forms.
