For the first time, Fresno State’s Department of Media, Communications and Journalism will partner with the Asian College of Journalism for Pop Up Newsroom, an experimental broadcast focusing on culture that will air live on Facebook at 2:30 a.m. Feb. 1.
Dr. Yektan Türkyılmaz will give a presentation on “Van Vaspurakan Armenians: From Renaissance to Resistance and Genocide” at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the University Business Center, Alice Peters Auditorium, Room 191 on the Fresno State campus. The presentation is part of the Spring Lecture Series of the Armenian Studies Program.

CineCulture will present “Columbus” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in the Peters Education Center Auditorium at the Student Recreation Center (5010 N. Woodrow Ave.). Producer Andrew Miano will lead the post-screening discussion.
Two longtime veterans of The Fresno Bee join the Department of Media, Communications and Journalism, where they will teach aspiring young journalists in the print option. Former Executive Editor Jim Boren will teach two sections of the upper division writing course MCJ 102W – Reporting. And Donald Munro, who has provided a local voice for the Fresno arts scene since 2001, will teach MCJ 104 – Editing of Publications.
At the recent National Opera Association Conference in New Orleans (Jan. 3-7), voice Professors Dr. Maria Briggs and Dr. Anthony Radford, as well as master’s graduate Alejandra Tejeda, all presented on behalf of the Fresno State Department of Music.
On Friday, Feb. 2, six finalists will compete in the 2017-18 Fresno State Concerto Competition for the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra later this semester.

UPDATE: Fresno State’s national and state flags were posted at half-staff on Tuesday, July 2, in honor of Dr. Robert “Bob” Levine, a professor emeritus from the Department of Psychology and a renowned social psychologist who published five books, most recently “Stranger in the Mirror: The Scientific Search for the Self.” Dr. Levine died on June 22 after a sudden illness. The Fresno State CineCulture Series kicks off its spring 2018 lineup of film screenings with “Extra-Terrestrials (Extra Terrestias)” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26. The CineCulture Club promotes cultural awareness through film and post-screening discussions.
Dr. Sergio La Porta and Dr. Alison Vacca will present a lecture entitled “An Armenian Narrative on Early Islam: Ghevond’s History” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, in the University Business Center, Alice Peters Auditorium, Room 191. The presentation is the second in the Spring Lecture Series of the Armenian Studies Program. The Leon S. Peters Foundation is a co-sponsor of the event.
Fresno audiences will have two opportunities to hear music by Department of Music composition Professor Dr. Kenneth Froelich this month. The Fresno Philharmonic, conducted by new music director Rei Hotoda, will perform “Spinning Yarns,” the second movement of Froelich’s Symphony No. 1, during their 3 p.m. concert on Sunday, Jan. 28, at the William Saroyan Theatre.
